Experimental Teaching Platform

The Traditional Processing Workshop is made up of the wood shop, the work bench and sanding room, the comprehensive processing centre, the Material Library and the Artist-in-residence studio.

The wood shop is equipped with fully functional experimental woodworking equipment for complete experimental processing of wood cutting, polishing, milling, joining and surface treatment, and has introduced cutting equipment with world-class safety measures to minimize injury. It features also dust removal equipment to ensure the sanitation of the entire lab area during the lab teaching process.

The wood shop

The work bench and sanding room establishes a safe and reliable miniature grinding equipment cluster, equipped with a complete integrated experimental operating platform, experimental tool cabinets and protective equipment, and forms a seamless docking to other experimental processing areas, and also provides a resting area for teachers and students protected from noises from the processing area, ensuring a good interactive environment for experimental teaching.

The comprehensive processing centre in the post-processing hall is equipped with jig saws, electric drills and other hand-held power tools, which can complete the post-processing, finishing and assembly of processed products, with complete safety and security measures. In the process of experimental teaching, the area provides a safe and reliable environment for the post-processing of student experiments.

The comprehensive processing centre

The Materials Library, spearheaded by Mo Jiao and Wu Di, has acquired mobile storage and sorting cabinets and related equipment for arranging and displaying the collection of new design materials and traditional materials, providing a multi-sensory experimenting environment for students with a wide range of materials and processes.

The Materials Library

The Artist-in-residence studio plays a key role in the internationalization of the practice and experimental teaching of design disciplines. The studio opens up an exclusive experimental workbench and a small co-working space, providing required creative materials, certain exhibition materials and low-value consumable tools to assist resident artists/designers with their experiments and creation in the College’s workshops, and provides an opportunity for a solo exhibition, so as to bring students to participate in experimental creation and interaction in the actual creative environment, with the interaction between studio projects and other courses and guidance from resident artist-designers in experimental operations of undergraduate students, to promote experimental teaching in design disciplines. In addition, the experimental teaching facilities and equipment have been upgraded to align with higher international standards.
